Foundation Technique

The Long-Tail Cast On for Beginners

The most versatile, stretchy, and neat cast-on in knitting. Perfect for scarves, blankets, and sweater edges where you need flexible tension.

1 Estimate tail length: roughly 3 to 4 times the width of your planned cast-on edge.

2 Make a slip knot and place it onto one needle—this counts as your first stitch.

3 Hold yarn slingshot-style around thumb and index finger; scoop needle under thumb loop, over index strand, and pull through.

Crochet 101

Essential Crochet

Start in the round with zero hole in the center! The magic ring allows you to pull the tail and tighten the initial ring completely shut.

1 Cross the working yarn over the tail around your fingers to form an 'X'.

2 Insert hook under bottom right loop, catch top left working strand, and pull up a loop.

3 Chain 1 to secure the ring, then work your single or double crochets directly into the ring around both strands. Pull tail firmly to close!

Master the iconic 3-dc cluster motif. Make individual squares to join into a boho blanket, tote bag, or patchwork cardigan.

R1 Into a magic ring: (3 dc, ch 2) four times. Sl st to top of first ch-3 to join.

R2 Sl st to corner ch-2 sp. (Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner. *Ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner; repeat from * around.

Tip Turn your square each round for crisp, square corners that never twist!

Assembly & Construction

Join sweater side panels, sleeve seams, or pillow squares with an invisible stitch worked completely from the right (outside) side!

1 Lay pieces flat side-by-side with right sides facing you. Align rows and corners.

2 Using a tapestry needle, catch the running bar between edge stitch and second stitch on one side.

3 Cross over and catch the corresponding bar on the opposite piece. Pull snug every inch—the stitches disappear!
